Cyclone Giri destroyed embankments, paddy fields, stocks of rice and paddy seeds in Kyauk Phyu, Rakhine State. Mercy Corps and CDA selected 13 villages from 4 Village Tracts to provide assistance through cash-for-work to repair the damaged embankments to protect sea water intrusions of agriculture lands and for early recovery of agriculture support for the community.
A total length of 95424 feet of embankment was repaired from March to May 2011, strengthening them through increase at the base, height and breadth to sustain them. Water gateways in these villages were also repaired.
Replacements for lost assets were also provided in the form of rice seeds, fertilizers, boats, and fishing nets ( Hilsa nets) to strengthen the livelihood of farmers and fishers in the area.
